First download AVG free anti-virus software from here.
After running the setup program, you will see the main control panel:
If you didn't update during the setup process, you should do so as soon as possible by clicking the "Check For Updates" button on the left. AVG free anti-virus software will install these updates automatically once they have been downloaded.
AVG virus protection software doesn't require any advanced configuration, it is pretty much ready to go right away. However I do recommend that you disable the automatic full scan. It has a tendency to scan during times when you are busy using your computer and can slow down processes and interfere with games.
To disable this functionality in AVG right click on Scheduler and then select "Scheduled Tasks". Double click on Test Plan in Basic Mode and in the box that opens deselect all available options to disable regularly scheduled scanning. I recommend leaving Update Plan in Basic Mode on automatic, as this will update the virus definitions automatically on a daily basis.
However if you choose to remove the checkmark from "Update Plan in Basic Mode" in Scheduled Tasks, be sure to manually update the virus definitions often, preferably every day.
Run the Complete Test manually during a time when you are not going to be using your computer by clicking Test Center - Scan Computer, once a week or more to ensure a clean system.
As you can see in the following screenshot taken of my email inbox, AVG virus protection software checks your incoming mail for viruses and quarantines them automatically. I recieve several viruses via email everyday, so I would definately recommend running a virus scanner at all times.
